- Only use ATM machines in a well-lighted, open, high-traffic area
Always use a well lighted ATM machine located in an open, high traffic area with high visibility.
- ATM machines located in an inside location are safer for night time use
An ATM machine that is inside a grocery store or other public inside location is safer to use at night.

- Avoid ATM machines adjacent to obvious hiding places
Scan the surrounding area for hiding places and avoid using an ATM where you do not have a clear view of your immediate area.
- Be sure to scan the area for loiterers before using an ATM
Do not use an ATM machine when loiterers or people you don't know are present in the immediate vicinity. Always keep a safe distance between yourself and strangers.
- Have your card ready and leave quickly, do not count your cash in public
Complete your transaction as quickly as you can and secure your cash in your purse or wallet. If you believe that you are being followed, go to the nearest place where there are people and call the police.
- Walk or drive away immediately if your instincts tell you so
If you suspect that something is not right, leave the ATM machine immediately.
- Don't argue with a robber, if confronted, and give up the cash.
Your personally safety comes first. Never argue with a robber. Leave your ATM card if you need to. Always put your personal safety first!
